Planting Instructions and Tips to Tree Growers

   Care of Plantations

It is not necessary to cultivate the filed in any manner.  In many cases sod between the rows proves to be an advantage, however, if the grass is heavy and becomes too tall in the rows then corrective measures must be taken.  You may remove the grass and weeds mechanically with power mowers and brush cutters or you may use one or a combination of the many herbicides presently available on the market.  Check with you local country agent for the approved herbicides in your state.

All hardwoods should be cleared from a plantation.  Pine species thrive in sunshine and do poorly in partial shade.  Many growers plant Spruce or Fir in the first five to ten rows bordering fence tows or other wooded areas, they do well in partial shade.
