Planting Instructions and Tips to Tree Growers

Fertilization

We do not recommend fertilization the first year of planting.  The root system can be damaged by the fertilizer, resulting in a loss of the tree.  Also, fertilization the first year can stress the tree in times of drought.  It is best to fertilize the spring after planting.  The trees are firmly established and there is little chance that the root systems can be damaged.  Place a few ounces around each tree near the branch drip line and not up against the tree.  Triple Ten (10-10-10) is a good general fertilizer that can be used.  Other blends such as 5-10-10, 19-19-19, etc. can be used.  Just make sure that any fertilizer that sticks to the foliage is brushed off to prevent burning.  Avoid fertilizing when the trees are wet.  To find specific needs, soil samples will need to be taken and sent to a lab.  Any lime application should be worked into the soil through cultivation.
